What is the history of The Art of Awareness?
The Art of Awareness Studio was created about 5 years ago after volunteering at a local retreat center, I was then asked by an acquaintance to curate a healing arts retreat for her. This transformative retreat, which included music, dance and other forms of creative expression, took place in my family’s little weekend cottage which was located in a small, historic and forested artist and writers’ community in the USA. The following year, having personally recovered from loss and a spinal cord injury, and from my own journey knowing first-hand the healing aspects of mindful creative expression and nature immersion, I developed an evidence-based wellbeing workshop series for USA physical therapy patients experiencing chronic and ongoing pain.
Around that time, I also created a wellbeing program for USA middle school students and facilitated a number of wellbeing retreats for carers in the USA and Aotearoa New Zealand. In addition, I separately taught an Australian masters subject on nature and wellbeing and, via my virtual studio, offered various community support programs pre, during and post pandemic. This virtual option for creative expression and nature-based design for wellbeing and adaptability still remains and is now available all year. In summer I open my physical studio (The Art of Awareness) for a limited time and offer restorative, 1-1, nature immersion wellbeing retreats which include contemplative pedagogy, healing arts and creative expression. I have also hosted an Artist-in-Residence to support the wellbeing of people and planet.

Are you wanting to take a more sustainable and regenerative approach, but don't know how to? Do you feel overwhelmed?
I was grappling with some of these challenges, making mindful changes to what I bought and consumed and how I was living (currently solar-powered, car-less and intentionally connecting with community). I was trying to deepen my connection with the natural world, engaging across silos, and I still didn't feel I was making a difference to the challenges of our times, including natural disasters in our area.
After delving into the research, engaging in lots of unlearning, walks, reflection and conversations with diverse people (some who I had previously avoided), I pinpointed one of the unexpected, but now obvious, keystone aspects:
Action starts with Awareness.
I have designed a toolkit, a world first, which integrates what I have learnt and draws upon research to provide a framework to support a hopeful, caring culture, wellbeing design and adaptation during times of change.
